CHARLOTTE, N.C. – 18 former NBA players are indicted on charges that they tried to defraud an NBA health care plan out of nearly $4 million. They’re accused of submitting bogus claims for reimbursement for medical and dental services that they never actually got.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Audrey Strauss, announced the charges at a news conference Thursday. Strauss says, “The 19 charged defendants submitted approximately $3.9 million dollars in false claims. The plan paid out $2.5 million dollars to the defendants and Williams received approximately $230,000 in kickbacks.”
Terrence Williams, who played for the New Jersey Nets and the Houston Rockets, is accused of orchestrating the scheme and recruiting other former players. The men played in the NBA in the late 1990s and 2000s. Notables include Ronald Glen Davis and Tony Allen, both of whom played on the Boston Celtics. The 18 former players are charged, along with one other person, Desiree Allen. She’s the wife of Allen.
