Charlotte Moves Away From Having Police Officers Respond To Mental Health 911 Calls

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Police will no longer respond to some mental health 911 calls in Charlotte.

The city is moving forward with a pilot program to send an EMT and a mental health clinician, instead of a police officer.

It’s part of the city’s effort to re-imagine policing.

Mental health advocate Fonda Bryant supports changing who responds.

“When you bring someone in with a uniform on, it changes the dynamics all together,” she says.

For now, the city will not move forward with another recommendation to have two-person civilian teams respond to low risk calls, things like noise complains or illegal parking.

Researchers found mixed community support.
